It’s All About Jesus

Colossians 1:16 says, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” The Him here is a reference to Jesus, the image of the “invisible God” mentioned in the previous verse fifteen. These verses are some of the most beautiful and theologically rich statements about Jesus in the New Testament. Many scholars believe they comprised an early hymn circulated among believers in the first century.

When Paul says that all things were made by Him and for Him, he is expressing Jesus’ central and superior role in creation. What Paul is saying is that Jesus has the ultimate position of honor and holds divine power over all the created order. Jesus reigns supreme as the Son of God over all creation. All things—both visible and invisible, natural and supernatural—were created by and through Jesus Christ and are all subject to His authority. He is Master and Commander over all. The apostle John put it like this: “All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created” (John 1:3). 

Everything in creation was made by Jesus, through Jesus, and for Jesus (Romans 11:36). All things were created for Him. All that came into being exists for Christ — that is, it exists to display the greatness of Christ. Nothing — nothing! — in the universe exists for its own sake, including you and I. Everything is about Him. It’s all about Him. Everything we can see with our eyes – plants, animals, humankind, sea life, the sun, moon, stars, and planets, mountains, valleys, forests, rivers, lakes, oceans, and seas; plus all the things we can’t see with our eyes – everything that exists in the spiritual realm even the cosmic powers of darkness and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Eph 6:12), which He created good but who rebelled against God and were shamed and defeated by Christ at the cross (Colossians 2:15). 

Everything from the bottom of the oceans to the top of the mountains, from the smallest particle to the biggest star, from the most boring school subject to the most fascinating science, from the ugliest cockroach to the most beautiful human, from the greatest saint to the most wicked genocidal dictator — everything that exists, exists to make the greatness of Christ more fully known — including you, and the person you may have the hardest time liking. He created us to display His glory, that is, that His glory might be known and praised (Isaiah 43:7). It’s all about Him and not about me, not about you. Our existence is not about us and what we want, rather it’s all about glorifying Jesus. He is the end goal of all creation. All things were created for Him in order to bring Him glory and display God’s power (Revelation 4:11). In the end, everything and everyone serves to magnify the glory of our Savior and increase the gladness of His people in Him. It’s all about Jesus!
